STEAMBOAT-HOME OF CHAMPAGNE POWDERâ„¢ SNOW HITS 175-INCH SNOWFALL MILESTONE
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-January 7, 2008-January 2009 has come in like a lion with nearly 4 feet of light, fluffy and super-dry signature Champagne Powder snow in the past five days at the summit of the Steamboat Ski Area. With 100 inches in December and all the new snow this past week, Steamboat hit the 175-inch (14.58 feet) snow milestone for the season today.
“Steamboat has some of the best snow in the Rocky Mountains, the largest mid-mountain base of the major Colorado destination resorts, and a summit base that’s topping out at 70 inches,” said Rob Perlman, vice president of sales & marketing for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation.
The resort is currently in a storm cycle that as of 5am this morning has yielded 16” at mid-mountain and 18” at the summit overnight; 25” at mid-mountain and 27” at the summit in past 48-hours and 35” at mid-mountain and 42” at the summit in the past five days. The resort is reporting a 61-inch base at mid-mountain and 70-inch base at the summit on powder conditions.
"The first week of January is being called one of the best powder weeks of the season by local powderhounds, and it still has not stopped snowing,” continued Perlman. “The 2008/09 season is shaping up to be remembered as a legendary snow year and we’re less than half way through the season. With 100” in December 2008 and January coming in like a lion, Mother Nature’s attention is definitely squarely focused on Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.® and powderhounds couldn’t be happier!”
Since the resort opened on November 26th, snow has fallen 30 out of 43 days (69.7%) with 20 of those days recording four or more inches. So far this season at mid-mountain, Steamboat has seen 4.75” in October; 35.25” in November; 100” in December; and 35” in January for a combined total of 175” (14.58 feet). The resort is just 6 inches behind its record Champagne Powder 2007/2008 snow season pace, when 489 inches blanketed the resort. Steamboat is currently under a winter storm warming until 6pm (MST) today, with forecasts calling for additional snow throughout the upcoming weekend.
