Steamboat Ski Resort becomes the second largest ski resort in Colorado with the addition of 650+ acres of advanced/expert terrain. Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon have long been a part of Steamboat’s sidecountry experience, and now the terrain will be managed inside the ski area boundary.

Know Before You Go

Mahogany Ridge is over 650 acres of Advanced/Expert terrain with rock cliffs, chutes and tree glades, and avalanche risk. Before you access this area of the mountain, we highly recommend the following:

  • Save Steamboat Ski Patrol's phone number to your mobile device. 970-871-5911.
  • Bring avalanche gear (beacon, shovel, snow probe), medical or first aid kit, water and snacks, helmet, headlamp, and warm clothing.
  • Always go with a buddy.
  • Download the Steamboat App to access 'Call Ski Patrol' feature on the home screen that also provides your gps coordinates.
  • Take Pony Express Chairlift to the top.
  • Go left and take Fairway to get into the Mahogany Ridge terrain.
From Edge of the World:
  • Take Edge of the World to the bottom.
  • Ride Mahogany Ridge Express to the top.
  • Go right at the top.
  • Take trail of choice down.
From Edge of the World, enter Fish Creek Canyon through one of the following gates: Endless Gully, Ultimate Glades, Boulder Field, Milk Run, or Two Step.
From the edge of the ski area boundary, if you took one of the gates (Endless Gully, Ultimate Glades, Boulder Field, Milk Run, or Two Step) into terrain in Fish Creek Canyon:
  • Follow the signage for a 30-45 minute hike out to the bottom of Mahogany Ridge Express.
  • Take Mahogany Ridge Express to the top.
  • Go right at the top.
  • Take trail of choice down.
Mahogany Ridge Express operates from 9:00am - 3:15pm. The opening date will be determined based on weather and conditions.

Trail Signage & Terrain Navigation

Below are signs one can expect to encounter in Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon that should be obeyed to help navigate the terrain and landmarks safely.

Indicates a closed trail and typically attached to red rope that should not be bypassed.

Distinguishes the line between in-resort terrain and backcountry (not managed by the ski resort).

Indicates a suggested route to get you from the top of a trail to the bottom.

Indicates a large cliff(s) ahead and to begin moving horizontally to avoid.

Indicates that there is open water, river or creek, ahead and how to navigate around it.

Indicates deep snow and should avoid skiing and riding too close to the trees.

Fun Facts

  • With the expansion of Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon, Steamboat is now the second largest ski resort in Colorado.
  • The new terrain increases Steamboat's trail count to 181, lifts to 23, and skiable acreage to 3,741.
  • To help patrol this area, Steamboat implemented an Avalanche Dog Program with the addition of Daisy (Black Lab), Mudd (Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix), and Ty (Golden Retriever).
  • Mahogany Ridge will remain uncut except for the lift line and will have a new highspeed detachable quad chairlift.
  • Fish Creek Canyon is extreme terrain and requires a 30-45 minute traverse hike out to get to the bottom of Mahogany Ridge Express.
