The magic of Steamboat comes to life through events that bring our community and visitors together in unforgettable ways. From deep-rooted traditions to lively mountain festivals, winter in Ski Town, U.S.A.® is packed with moments worth planning your trip around. Whether you’re here for heritage, music, or mountain-made memories, these five signature events capture the spirit of Steamboat all season long.

Bud Light Cowboy Downhill – January
When it comes to iconic Steamboat traditions, nothing tops the Bud Light Cowboy Downhill. What started as a friendly ski day between Olympian Billy Kidd and world-champion cowboy Larry Mahan has grown into one of the most unique ski events in the world. Each winter, more than 100 pro rodeo athletes charge down the mountain in full cowboy gear, blending Western heritage with ski-town flair. It’s fast, festive, and unmistakably Steamboat.

Steamboat Winter Carnival – February
Steamboat’s legacy as Ski Town, U.S.A.® shines during Winter Carnival, a beloved celebration hosted by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club—one of the oldest winter sports clubs in the country. Downtown Steamboat transforms into a hub of ski racing, ski jumping, and skijoring along Lincoln Avenue, capped off with a legendary nighttime show featuring the Lighted Man and fireworks. It’s equal parts history, athleticism, and community pride.

Light Up the Night – February
One of winter’s most family-friendly evenings on the mountain, Light Up the Night brings several Steamboat favorites together in one unforgettable celebration. The night kicks off with a glowing hot air balloon display at the base area, followed by a torchlight parade and fireworks lighting up the sky. Stick around to grab a bite at Timber & Torch or The Range Food & Drink Hall, lace up for some skating, or enjoy turns under the lights during night skiing.

WinterWonderGrass – Late February / Early March
Few festivals capture the soul of Steamboat quite like WinterWonderGrass. This three-day celebration blends world-class bluegrass music with mountain scenery, craft beer, and a strong commitment to community and sustainability. With daily brewery tastings and evening shows set against snowy backdrops or star-filled skies, WinterWonderGrass delivers a one-of-a-kind festival experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Bud Light Rocks the Boat Concert Series – March through April
As winter transitions to spring, the Bud Light Rocks the Boat Concert Series turns the base area into the ultimate après scene. Free live music fills sunny afternoons and laid-back evenings, featuring a rotating mix of genres—from bluegrass to rock and beyond. There’s no better way to wrap up a ski day than dancing in ski boots with a drink in hand and the Yampa Valley vibes turned all the way up.

These events are just a taste of what winter in Steamboat has to offer, but they’re some of the most beloved for a reason.
