How to Navigate Mahogany Ridge & Fish Creek Canyon
Mahogany Ridge and the adjacent Fish Creek Canyon represent some of the most dynamic and consequential terrain at Steamboat. Once familiar to experienced locals as accessible backcountry, these zones are now part of the resort’s operating boundary—bringing a new level of access, responsibility, and opportunity for expert skiers and riders.

This expansive area spans hundreds of acres of advanced, expert, and extreme terrain. Expect steep glades, exposed rock features, cliff bands, chutes, and long fall lines that reward strong decision-making and solid mountain awareness. While this terrain delivers some of the most memorable skiing and riding on the mountain, it also demands preparation, patience, and respect.

What Makes This Terrain Different
Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon remain largely in their natural state. There are no traditionally cut trails, and vegetation, rocks, and terrain features are intentionally left untouched to protect the surrounding watershed. Elevation changes, variable snow coverage, and complex terrain mean conditions can change quickly and require more snow to become safely skiable than other areas of the resort.

Because of this, opening and maintaining access takes significant coordination between Ski Patrol and Mountain Operations. Avalanche mitigation—including hand charges, ski cutting, and ongoing snowpack evaluation—is a critical and continuous process. Closures are not arbitrary; they are essential for guest safety and for protecting the teams working in these zones.

Know Before You Go
This is terrain for confident experts only. Before heading out, take the time to prepare:
  • Always ski or ride with a partner
  • Study the trail map and pay close attention to signage and gate information
  • Be aware that some routes require a 30–45 minute hike out
  • Carry appropriate gear, including extra layers, water, snacks, and emergency essentials
  • Respect all closures—Patrol may be conducting avalanche mitigation at any time
Staying within open, in-bounds terrain and honoring closures keeps everyone safer, including the crews working behind the scenes.

How to Access Mahogany Ridge
Access begins from the upper mountain, typically via lifts servicing the Pony Express area. From there, skiers and riders can navigate toward Mahogany Ridge using a combination of groomed and ungroomed routes, depending on conditions and comfort level.

Pay close attention once you leave primary runs—this is where terrain becomes steeper, more technical, and less forgiving. Gate locations, warning signs, and route choices matter here.

Respect the Mountain
